CNET editors' review
CNET Reviewed twice by CNET staff and awarded 5 Stars (best rating: "spectacular") both times

It's a small world, unless you're the one who sets the clocks. Years ago, keeping track of the time around the world meant a row of wall clocks with labels like "Leningrad" and "Peking." Things are easier in this century, and it's easy to keep track of the time in Beijing or Kalamazoo, Mich. But those who need to track multiple time zones simultaneously still face more of a challenge. That's where tools like Sharp World Clock step in.

Unlike many desktop clocks, it's shareware, though it's free to try for 15 days. But it's hard to find comparable freeware that can track multiple analog or digital clocks in customizable configurations, let alone as capably. Sharp World Clock Version 5 offers many new features, including automatic updates of Daylight Saving Time, independently undockable clocks, Aero effects, an Alarm Center, and extras such as Sticky Notes, Weather Report, News Feeds, and Spoken Time.

When we tried it, Sharp World Clock's semitransparent main window displayed eight docked analog clocks set to major cities around the world. A Help feature controlled by a handy, tiny toolbar at the bottom edge of our screen opened when we ran the program for the first time. The Quick Start page makes setting up Sharp World Clock very easy: simply select a city or other location, and the program's Time Zone Calculator does the rest. You can also select a location on a Daylight Map or directly enter latitude and longitude. The Clock Designer tab offers tons of choices in a nicely designed layout with clean graphics - something we can say about the rest of this program's layout and design choices, too. For example, sliders let us quickly resize our clocks as well as their international flag displays. A System Tray icon accesses a comprehensive menu of Sharp World Clock's settings and features.

Despite its many options and extras, Sharp World Clock is extremely easy to use: Simply right-click any clock face to undock it, customize its look, change its settings, and access extras like the Feed Reader and others. If you need to track time around the world, try this tool.

  • »Fabulous Product. Very easy to read - love the ability to set the colors & background displays as I choose. Easy to edit and add or remove locations. I absolutely love my Sharp World Clock. It is always visable on my desktop enabling me to keep track of my local time in the states as well as the time of a friend in London so we can Skype & IM. I registered several years ago. Trust me....this desktop clock will remain a part of my desktop for a very long time!«
  • »Best clock program I have seen & worth for money spent. Nice interface & easy to customize; It has 34 preset faces to choose & almost everything is adjustable according to need. Time offset of other cities from local time is very useful. Graphical sky interface gives an easy visualization of other cities. Compared to other similar products its interface is attractive. Both analog and digital clocks can be set. There is no limit to the number of clocks. Time zone converter is provided. A graphic sky can be attached to the clock face - this is not seen in similar other products. Lots of other functions provided. I strongly recommend to try it.«
  • »I checked out quite a few sites, but this one stood out by far, because it's very good looking, highly customizable, powerful and trustworthy being 100% clean and tested. In short, nothing short of excellent. Finally, the author Mr. Johannes Wallroth is also very courteous, helpful and responsive.«
  • »Most of my customers are in other countries. I also have several sales people that are scattered over the USA. Sharp World Clock helps me keep up with time of both. I love it!.«
  • »Reliable, easy to use, lots of features. It is really one of the best in the market. You just have all in one: calculating time zone, multi-use alarm and every day remainder. Using it every day.«
  • »Great program with many as yet unexplored options - and I've been using it daily for over two years. With every new computer, Sharp World Clock is one of the first programs I install. Well worth the money, especially with free upgrades for life.«
  • »This is a feature rich and mature piece of software which I've been using for almost three years. I'm an engineer with appreciation for detail and this product provides a simple interface with layers of superb detail which allows me to configure precisely as I want. World Clock takes care of summer and winter savings time by applying the appropriate rules at the exact change over times - I dont need to concern myself with that detail. If you have a requirement for knowing local times around the world, this is the best software product available, I tried all I could find before settling on this and it's never let me down during the past three years..«
  • »I like it's many ways to customize it, the looks and the overall functionality, I have for an example 10 clocks on my desktop showing the time of my friends all over the world customized the way I want them. I have many DJ friends around the globe and I've always had the problem that I didn't know what their local time was. I tried many different so called world clocks but nothing as good as the Sharp World Clock. Very easy to configure and good looking app. Much recommended!«
  • »Features galore and they are just awesome. I am in the FOREX market, this clock makes my life considerably easier for the different time zones conversion I deal with. The support is speedy and very to the point. Thanks Mr Wallroth.«
  • »The Sharp World Clock takes care of my needs perfectly. I email or call people halfway around the world very often, so the night sky feature lets me know at a glance if I am calling too early or too late. Highly recommended even if you just call nationally from coast to coast. «
  • »I have been using this for many years, it is practical and colorful. Free updates forever and great customer service. Highly recommended. Just love the product.«
  • »I've used it for 4 years. Highly flexible and customizable, yet menus are easy to understand and use. So much people want every bell & whistle imaginable, which wouldn't necessarily make this better. Technical support is the BEST!«
  • » The product is top of the line for what it is intended to do. I have used other world clock programs but this one is tops in terms of look and feel, functionality and general usage. Just having it on my desktop gets people interested since so many people often need to know what time it is in other parts of the world. Conducting world-wise business, this at-a-glance look for world time is exactly what I have been looking for.«
  • » I travel a lot and have been using the Sharp World Clock for several years. It helps me avoid those calls when you have to say "Oh sorry, I forgot the 9 hour time difference..." Keep up the fine work - I don't know what I'd do without it. If you avoid a single embarrassing call that wakes someone in the middle of their night, it is money well spent. Stop looking for something free because you'll get exactly what you pay for. This is the BEST!«
  • »What has impressed me most about this product is the integration of both functionality and elegance, with no apparent "trade off" between the two. I've tried so many world clock programs and none have come close to this one. It's not just visually appealing either; the sound files (the chimes in particular) are hauntingly realistic. Highly recommended.«
  • » I can not imagine a feature you would want in a clock app that is not included in Sharp World Clock. It makes other clock programs look dumb. Version 5 has outdone itself. I like to trade on world markets like forex and I use this program to remind me when markets are opening or close. That is super easy with alarms and office hours. I can only think of about 100 other reasons to use it. If you need an app for even one other time zone I wouldn't bother with the others, I did and this is the one I was looking for. It is fun to configure and is really sharp.«
  • » My friends ask why I would pay for a clock program when there are so many that are free. Hah! There are mostly many that have very limited functionality. I congratulate you for your effort and your insights. This is by far the most useful of the many clock programs I've tried. The customizing options are superb. You've truly done a world-class job with it.

» Version History
  • 6.32 (July 28th, 2014)
    • Cities in the "Time Zones" tab are not listed individually anymore; instead only countries in that time zone are listed
    • Further improvements of the weather report/forecast function
  • 6.31
    • Added a "Switch" button to the time zone calculator, to quickly switch between the two selected cities
    • Increased the time for the "weather tooltip" to show up (now 2 seconds)
    • Improved stability of the weather report/forecast function (added a timeout after 5 seconds)
  • 6.3 Added an automatic atomic time synch feature (Windows only synchronizes once a week, which for some users is not enough). The system clock can be synchronized at certain intervals (24 hours...10 minutes) with NIST servers on the internet (before it could only be checked and synchronized manually). You have to manually install the required Windows service once (from the settings dialog, requires user elevation and an activated installation), then it will always start and run in the background, even after a reboot. Users who do not want or need it, don't have to install it - it is not automatically installed with the program.
  • 6.27 Padding (space between clock face and border) can now be 100 instead of 20 for an analog clock array
  • 6.26 Added an option to position the optional date label on top of the time label; small changes in the Clock Designer.
  • 6.25 Fixed a left over issue on systems with high resolution screens: the "Dimmer" slider could be invisible
  • 6.24 Fixed two bugs:
    • The background / clock face designer was partly broken since one of the last updates
    • The "Info about..." dialog cold not be opened anymore from the menu icon context menu since version 6.22
  • 6.23 The custom color swatches in the "More Colors" part of the Color Dialog popup windows can now be used
  • 6.22 Updated notification icon library (enhanced compatibility with Windows 8 / 64bit systems)
  • 6.21 Improved calculation and performance of screen resolution detection
  • 6.2
    • Enabled correct functionality on systems with other than normal screen resolution (like 125%)
    • Added checkbox to disable the tooltip window
    • Several small bug fixes and improvements.
  • 6.1 Weather conditions are now displayed in the tooltip (on mouse-over): current condition and temperature, minimum and maximum temperature.
  • 6.01 Fixed the display of office open/closed state in the tooltip of single (undocked) clocks
  • 6.0 Improved the "Tooltip" popup window, which appears on mouse-over for each clock: It is now an independent window and not a system tooltip, allowing fading, text formatting and fixing the problem of its disappearing too soon on the first mouse-over event.
  • 5.90 Fixed the "Transitions" list -> Past Transitions. Now it correctly shows the last transitions, regardless if daylight start or end
  • 5.89 Fixed the time zone for Minsk, Belarus and Kaliningrad, Russian Federation
  • 5.88
    • Fixed a bug in the "Alarm Center": an alarm time for the time zone in another city will now be correctly calculated again (function was broken in last version)
    • 12 AM and 12 PM are now spoken as "12 midnight" and "12 noon", when "speak the time" is enabled
  • 5.87
    • Fixed a small bug in the "Alarm Center": after editing an alarm, the tab title would remain at "Edit Alarm" instead of "Add Alarm"
    • When editing an alarm, the selection "Local Time / Time in City..." is now hidden, since setting an alarm for a distant time zone will always be converted to the local time zone before saving anyway
    • The checkbox "Disable Dimmer on this Clock" on single (separated) clocks is now gone and so is the "Dimmer" trackbar on single clocks. Single clocks will usually not be dimmed on out-of-office hours
    • Added a help link to the "Dimmer" trackbar on main window clocks, informing about the function
    • Corrected the miniatur flag image of Italy in the "Countries" tab
  • 5.86
    • Fixed the "Time Zones" (virtual locations) list in the city selector, which was accidentally disabled in a prior version
    • "Atomic Time" synch function: unresponsive servers are now correctly ignored; Added progress indicator; Clock Setter executable is now digitally signed
    • Alarm messages can now have line breaks (the Add / Edit Alarm button does not catch the return key anymore)
    • Corrected the time zone for Puerto Ayora, Ecuador
    • Import / Export function: "Cities" and "Countries" are now unchecked by default, to avoid overwriting fixed files with older versions.
  • 5.85
    • Added an option to select either local time offset or UTC offset for the label in the upper left corner of the analog clocks
    • Added UTC offset to the clock tooltips and help tooltips to the design section of the Edit dialog
    • Added the country to the cities for the "Time Zones" table
    • Fixed time zone info for the Cayman Islands, Jamaica, Panama and Haiti
  • 5.84 Improved compatibility with Windows 8 final
  • 5.83
    • Fixed: changing flag size or padding would also change the clock size in a one-column layout
    • Fixed: clock size increased by 2 on every program start, when a one-column layout was set
    • Fixed: time zone info for Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and the Falkland Isles
  • 5.82 Fixed an incompatibility with Windows 8 (RC). Sharp World Clock should now run fine on Windows 8.
  • 5.81
    • Fixed time zone for the Dominican Republic
    • Fixed a bug: confirmation dialog on closing a clock showed an incorrect text message
    • Weather report uses the default proxy settings now, if a proxy is configured
  • 5.8
    • Added "Shadow" checkbox in Clock Designer section (below the font selectors), to optionally re-enable the drop shadows for the labels, which were disabled in version 5.79. This checkbox works globally for all clocks, not just for the selected clock. It applies to City/Date/Time labels as well as AM/PM and Offset labels in analog mode.
    • Fixed a small layout bug: for single clocks in digital-only mode the "Gloss" effect would overlap the clock rim, if enabled.
  • 5.79
    • Flag size trackbar is now correctly hidden, when there is no flag available (for virtual locations/time zones)
    • Added explaining help text to the time format list (Clock Designer section), changed its colors and renamed it from "Documentation" to "Date / Time Lookup Table" (some users did not realize this was no control, just a lookup table)
    • Added help text over the "Ctrl Mode" selector, for single (undocked) clocks
    • Removed drop shadow from the city / date / time labels, to improve the performance on slower computers
    • Fixed small bugs in the Sunrise / Sunset section and in the font selectors
  • 5.78
    • Fixed update module / file downloader, which did not work / worked slowly for many users
  • 5.77
    • Added "Past Transitions" to the (daylight saving) "Transitions" table. Switch between upcoming and past transitions with a link.
    • Fixed a small layout bug in the Countries / Time Zones / Transitions tables (table was partially hidden in the lower part).
    • Fixed a bug, where the position of the clock was not correctly restored, when a "one-column" layout was selected
  • 5.76
    • When setting a time zone with a greater UST offset than the computer's UTC offset, a crash would result in the sunrise / sunset module because of invalid sun data. Solution: disabled calculation and display of sunrise / sunset data for virtual (time zone) locations. Also disabled ("n/a") latitude and longitude display.
    • Fixed a bug that could result in a crash, when trying to clone a single (undocked) clock.
    • Fixed a bug that could result in a crash in the font dialog, when an invalid font was selected.
    • Small improvement: when changing a font size inside the "Select Font" dialog, it will now have an effect (within the limits of the track bar) and will not be ignored.
  • 5.75
    • Fixed display of UTC time in the Time Zone Calculator ("Convert from..." box): UTC time is now correctly updated when the city changes.
    • Clock window corners are correctly updated when all but one clocks are removed.
    • Confirmation dialog text changes, when last clock in main window is about to be removed.
  • 5.74
    • Improved tooltip design and behavior.
  • 5.73
    • In the Time Zone Calculator dialog the labels for the time zones and the daylight saving information are now correctly updated for the destination city and the target city, when the date/time pickers are set; they do not just show the current UTC offset / daylight saving status anymore, but for the target date/time instead.
    • In the Live Time Shift (same dialog) the minutes can now be set with or without a 5 minutes grid.
    • The dimmer has a new configuration option: "Dim before 6 AM and after 6 PM"
    • Fixed time zone for Panama
  • 5.72 The hour marks in the analog clock can now be rectangles, circles or triangles. For the minute marks: circles can be set, instead of rectangles. Unified style selection for numbers (number picker instead of checkbox).
  • 5.71
    • In the 'Select City' part of the Edit dialog the 'New' and 'Edit' buttons have been replaced with 'Add' and 'Edit' link labels, like in the Design/Preset section. Some users were confused about the function of these buttons, so it seemed better to make these rarely used functions less visible.
  • 5.7
    • Clock windows can now be resized simply by dragging the handle in the lower right corner (appears on mouse-hover)! The track bar in the Edit dialog can still be used though.
    • The old "Layout" track bar was replaced with numeric pickers for Rows and Columns, which should be more intuitive for new users.
    • Bug fix: when editing a one-time alarm that was set for a foreign time zone (inserted after converting to local time), the selection was shown for the foreign time zone, but the time picker for local time
  • 5.6
    • The dimmer has new configuration options, additionally to the "out-of-office" hours: dim from noon until midnight and dim during night time (after sunset and before sunrise).
    • The dimming can be disabled for a single (undocked) clock, which is especially useful when using such a clock as an "anchor" or replacement for the desktop (sidebar) clock, where a dimming effect would not look good.
    • Added new option "Integrate Corners" to the Settings->Miscellaneous section. This allows you to remove the rounded corners from the clocks within the clock array. Only the four corner clocks keep rounded corners. Especially along with the option "no margins" this looks very elegant.
    • Added help tooltips to the checkboxes and drop-down-menus in the Settings->Miscellaneous section.
    • When using the Live Time Shift function in the Time Zone Calculator, the dimming effect will now also be updated correctly
