CNET editors' review
CNET Reviewed by CNET staff and awarded 5 Stars (best rating)

It's one world, but keeping track of the time on the other side of the planet requires a little help and a better timepiece than the Windows system clock. One of the best is Sharp World Clock, as clean and accurate a handle as the international timekeepers it displays. You can easily set it to display any number of configurable digital or analog clocks at once in a row or grid; change their sizes, colors, backgrounds, and other aspects; and display national flags for quick visual identification. You can also show day or night indicators, sunrise and sunset times, lunar phases, time zones, and more. It also boasts a zoom-capable world map depicting day and night areas, a configurable alarm clock, a calendar with a reminder feature, and the ability to add your own audio files for alarm sounds.

Both the clocks the program creates and its efficient, intuitive interface are unusually attractive and competently configured without being cluttered or garish, making subtle but effective use of color for highlighting and emphasis, even in the command dialogs. The clocks themselves, and the analog clock faces in particular, have high visual impact and readability, even at distance or a glance, but without resorting to flashy, distracting designs. In fact, they make good use of Vista-style highlighting to achieve the look of real instruments instead of a virtual display.

  • »Great world timer for the traveller. I downloaded about 5 programs and found it to be the best. Easy to use; clear and concise.«
  • »The clock app that I like better & better with time. Great attention to detail. Subtle features that keep enhancing value of clock, but clean simple, reliable interface.«
  • »Best product of its type I could find. Visually appealing and very user friendly: I like the fact that you can select the clocks you want, customize the presentation, and all clocks are managed in one single user interface.«
  • »Very easy to set up, very functional, easy to use and look at. The only clock I found that utilizes daylight savings correctly for the regions I need. Brilliant stuff. The best clock available, absolutely no doubt.«
  • »This is a sophisticated tool - but totally intuitive to set up and use. The whole design has been well thought out through. This is an example of "excellence". I have never seen such an elegant and useful international time tool. I downloaded (and uninstalled) plenty of others before I found this one.«
  • »I did my research - this is the best one out there.
The time converter is indispensable for planning phone conferences. The program is fast, visually pleasing and quite customizable. The moon phase thing is a nice extra. Great job - thanks!«

    » Version History
    • 5.51 - Fixed a small bug: office hours for new clocks are now applied instantly and not only on the next full minute. New: the sunrise and sunset times are now displayed in the tooltip (like they were in version 4), plus some other small improvements.
    • 5.5 - Improvement: font size for AM/PM label and Offset label can now be changed (can improve layout when long city names are in use, causing the font size of these lables to be too small in proportion to the other labels). Bug fixes: an undocked clock is now correctly set to the default Ctrl Mode "Hide with other Clocks" and the topmost mode of the main window is not being restored instantly, which could make the undocked clock inaccessible at first. Fixed a bug in the design section: after closing the dialog without pressing "Apply", design changes would also be applied to a clock (was only visible after a program restart).
    • 5.49 - Added an option to temporarily deactivate all upcoming alarms and chimes in the Alarm Center. Added a confirmation dialog to the "Click through" menu item in the tray icon context menu. Corrected time zones for Ecuador and Colombia. Fixed a bug in the alarm center for periodic alarms and minor design changes.
    • 5.48 - The chime sound and the "speak the time" function can now be limited to work only within a defined time span. The computer voice can now be selected by the user, separately for the "speak the time" function and the alarms, if "Speak Text" is enabled. Fixed a bug in the alarm center: an alarm could be put into the alarm popup cue repeatedly, instead of one time only. Several minor enhancements.
    • 5.47 - Added a (separate) volume knob to the "Speak the time" function in the Alarm Center, also volume changes for the chime sounds can now be monitored during playback. Fixed a bug that let the program crash if the Weather Report was aborted before a weather feed was loaded. Some minor bug fixes and enhancements.
    • 5.46 - Fixed bugs in the Alarm Center: a playing (long) sound file is now stopped when alarm popup is closed. Passed alarms that are edited and put back on schedule will now fire correctly. Time picker in the "Count down" alarm section now shows correct time format. In the Weather section: When the "Show all Cities" checkbox is toggled, the current city remains selected and will not be replaced by the first city in the list anymore. Fixed a bug in the "Solar noon" function, which could cause a .Net exception for specific cities (Tuvalu), when the edit dialog was opened. Edit dialog icon is not showed in the taskbar anymore.
    • 5.45 - Changed weather report display: night symbols are now only showed for the current day (if target city has night time), not for all days of the forecast. Patched the bug fix of version 5.44 - now it should work in any case, even on old installations (do not import an old city file after the update).
    • 5.44 - Fixed a bug: clocks supposed to show user defined cities could show other cities instead. Minor improvements: when the "Select City" tab is left without applying the selected city, a message box pops up to confirm. Balloon tip in taskbar is now hidden for registered users. In the "Presets" selector, the zero selection selects the original design now. Added and changed some design presets. Confirmation on docking a single clock.
    • 5.43 - Last selected cities (also the check state of "Show all Cities") in the Time Zone Calculator are now saved and restored, also added "Find City" buttons to that form; labels now have rounded corners. Updated changed country flag for Libya. Added "Find City" button to the weather report dialog; Minor design fixes.
    • 5.42 - Fixed a few small bugs in the Transitions table and the Time Zones table and generally for the display of daylight saving information, especially for countries that do not apply it anymore (Russian Federation, Morocco...). Added new functionality to the Transitions table: clicking a time zone switches to the rule details on the Time Zones table. Added "Speak the Time" for an interval of every half hour. Weather report always shows English weekdays now.
    • 5.41 - Fixed a bug with the auto size in the "Live Changes" slider area. Added the time of last observation for the weather report (converted to local time). Optimized the "Topmost" function (did't work on some PCs).
    • 5.4 - Added an online weather report feature (powered by worldweatheronline.com) for the current day and the next four days, for every city or (if city is not included) for every location. Fixed the Transitions table / tooltip - the dates and times of the next daylight saving transitions are now displayed correctly.
