Many users write to me emails like this:

"I bought your program xyz about 2 years ago, but cannot find my license code. Please send it to me again."

For a couple of years, I used to interrupt my work, search my database and send the user an email with his/her license code again. But over the years, that happened more and more as my user base grew - at times I get such letters several times a day and it became a serious annoyance to me.

When I send out the license key in the first place, the letter always contains the sentence "Please keep a copy of this email for a later installation". It seems reasonable to me for the user to follow that advice and not assume that the programmer or whoever would take responsible of this simple and self-evident task.

Most programmers do not send out keys a second time at all, because it would overwhelm them with work. And most programmers charge their users for updates - I don't and never did: "free updates for life" it reads on my website. But that does not include additional work after the purchase, like unlimited free email support.

So I decided I had to charge a small fee for the additional work - a USB stick to backup a program or at least the key costs only a few dollars; it seems unlikely that somebody does not have that amount after paying for software, so please pay for my time, if you want me to do additional work for you.
